RUNNING THE RACE

The Marine Corps Marathon was held several weekends ago (no, I didn’t run, but participated in cheering and encouraging 10 Midshipmen from the Naval Academy). This year, 21,398 runners finished the race, including all 10 mids.  Like you, I have heard people refer to life as a “marathon” but until I was in the midst of such a race, I had no idea how true this is. Here are some of my reflections from this awesome day:

The marathon course and life are filled with challenges and choices. Sometimes we will choose rightly. Sometimes we will not. Sometimes we will be right on course and know we are making progress in the race. At other times, we will find ourselves falling dismally behind. This race is not about speed, but about faithfulness and perseverance. Persevere!

As we run together with Christ, we will encounter other runners who, by their living example, inspire us to press on, especially when we hit the wall. They may even stop to assist us when we fall behind. God has placed them at strategic points along the course to encourage us, to believe in us. God will also lead us to those who need our encouragement. Encourage!

We also will discover, to our amazement, another group of encouragers: a "great cloud of witnesses" lining the road. Those who have passed on ahead of us and finished the race are still giving witness to the fact that it was indeed worth running and enduring. He gives us a glimpse of the victory that awaits us when we cross the finish line!  Endure!

In essence, we, as Christians, are in the greatest marathon event of all. It takes great endurance to run and finish the race of life. Fortunately, we have God’s Word and God’s people to provide all of the instruction and encouragement we need every day as we face life’s battles. Keep running!

A WAY TO GIVE THANKS TO OE STAFF!

Please consider this simple, yet very appreciated, ministry for your small group...  Or your own family...  Or your Christ family...openings are available for Nov. and Dec.  AND into the New Year.

On Tuesday mornings, the Oakdale Emory Staff convenes to pray about, discuss and plan our church’s ministries. These meetings often spill over into the lunch hour. On the third Tuesday of the month, you are invited to personally serve lunch to them or leave it in the church kitchen ready and waiting. Either way, you will be blessed by their expressions of gratitude. Gather your small group and/or your family to say thank you for the staff’s dedication to Oakdale Emory. Contact Becki Lomax, 301-570-8250, lomaxzoo@verizon.net to sign up today!

FINANCIAL PEACE UNIVERSITY

Pay It Forward: In January 2010, Oakdale Emory will host the Financial Peace University Course for the Olney Community. We feel strongly that money should not be the reason that anyone is unable to take the class. We’d like to build a scholarship bank in order to help others (young adults, newlyweds, college students…) and know that you may feel called to help in this ministry area. If you have been blessed with financial security and would like to help others (or specifically sponsor a couple) in this area, contact Amy Cole, 301-774-2030, acole@oeumc.org
