AN ACCIDENT WITH A PURPOSE?

Last Thursday evening, I backed into a parked car in a local shopping center. The damage to both vehicles was minor—a cracked tail light and scrapes on the bumpers. The owner was not present and I admit to being briefly tempted to just drive away. No one appeared to have seen what happened—except, of course, God knew. So I left my name and phone number on the windshield and went home to wait for a call.

“My conscience will not reproach me as long as I live.” Job 27:6

It came around 7:00. The first thing Louise said was how surprised and appreciative she was that I had left a note. I provided details, we exchanged insurance information and before we hung up, Louise said, “Thank you!” two more times. That’s not what you expect to hear when you’ve hit someone’s car, but I think perhaps Louise was blessed by knowing that there are still people in the world (in Olney!) who do the right thing, even when they know it will cost them something. And I actually came away feeling used by God in the life of another person—a stranger, no less.

“And we know that in all things God works together with those who love him to bring about what is good.” Romans 8:28

P.S. Pray that my honesty will include telling my son what happened to his car when he comes home from college next week. I’m thinking he’s not likely to thank me.

TONIGHT! CELEBRATE RECOVERY

Join us this evening (Thursday, May 8) at 7:00 p.m. for Celebrate Recovery. This ministry offers people the opportunity to worship and participate in a group fellowship where love and hope combine with God’s purpose to mend our lives of hurts, habits and hang-ups. It is a time to grow from self-reliance to faith in (and dependence on) Christ.

Ask yourself:

  • Is there something that is holding me back from going to the next level with God?
  • Are there things in my life that I do that hurt others?
  • Is there something I wish I could live without?
  • Is it time to crack my denial and admit I am not in control of my life?
  • Do I have a painful habit or hang-up from which I need to be freed?

If you answered “yes” to any of these statements, then we urge you to attend Celebrate Recovery. Celebrate Recovery maintains strict confidentiality. This promotes an atmosphere of trust, facilitates growth and enables recovery. Who is in the meeting and what is said in the meeting, stays in the meeting. See you tonight at 7:00 p.m. in the Chapel.

THIS FRIDAY! TIME-STARVED MARRIAGE CLASS

This class will use the book “Your Time-Starved Marriage” to help couples:

-        Dispel the two lies every time-starved couple believes.

-        Maximize the minutes that matter most in your marriage.

-        Recoup the time you’ve been leaving on the table.

-        Understand why “loving on borrowed time” is lethal.

Discover how to “get a grip on the time of your life.” Your Time-Starved Marriage gives you tools to feed your time-starved relationship, maximizing the moments you have together and enjoying them more than you ever imagined.

Class begins Friday, May 9, at 7:30 p.m. in the Assembly Area of Emory Hall. Led by Katie and Dave Young. Reserve your spot by contacting Amy Cole, acole@oeumc.org.

A CALL FOR ARMS

Who can resist babies’ chubby cheeks, wide eyes and toothless grins? The Nursery is in need of more loving arms to hold infants at all three services. We must have at least two adults in the Nursery at each service, in addition to teen helpers. The Nursery cares for children under the age of two, so there are plenty of opportunities for playing with little ones as well. Any amount of time that you can devote to this ministry would be appreciated. Contact: Katie Young, Pastor of Children’s Ministries, kyoung@oeumc.org, 301-774-2030

Just come 15 minutes early for a quick briefing. Contact: Katie Young, Pastor of Children’s Ministries, kyoung@oeumc.org, 301-774-2030

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR…

SPANISH LANGUAGE WORSHIP

Luis Franco is leading a Sunday evening worship from 5:00-6:00 p.m. in the Historic Chapel with our Spanish-speaking brothers and sisters in Christ. To enhance this wonderful fellowship and worship time, Luis is asking if there is someone who would be able to play the guitar during the opening of the service. Luis will provide the chord charts for the songs. The musician would not need to lead the singing (unless of course he or she would like to) nor is it a prerequisite for this person to be able to speak Spanish.

WORSHIP TECH TEAM

The tech team for the Sunday morning services needs more people to help create and run MediaShout scripts that control displays on the screen, operate cameras, and produce Moments for Ministry presentations. Training will be provided. Contact: Worship Pastor Sharon Starling, sstarling@oeumc.org, 301-774-2030.

CHURCH DIRECTORY

A new church directory is coming soon. If you are interested in helping with the planning process—phone calls and layout—please contact Susan Hoopes, 301-924-1065, sbhoopes@comcast.net.

COFFEE HOUR

Oakdale Emory consumes 100 dozen cookies every Sunday morning! Please consider signing up to host the fellowship time between services in the coming weeks. You can sign up on the calendar in the hallway near the Main Office or contact Joyce Meedan, 301-929-3264.

CARTRIDGES FOR HOPE

Help the Sunday School support the House of Hope Maryland project by recycling your empty computer printer cartridges. The mission of House of Hope is to offer healing, and Christ-centered solutions to troubled teens by providing structured education, Christian counseling, and spiritual guidance. When we send in cartridges, the recycling center sends us cash, which will help us achieve our goal of establishing a residential facility.

There are two ways to help: You can send in the cartridges directly. Stop by the office and pick up several postage-paid bags. Add 2 to 3 cartridges to the bag, send off and we will continue to receive the funds to help House of Hope. Or you can bring cartridges to church and place them in the white boxes in Brigham Hall and near the Sunday School desk. We hope all will pitch in to help!
